Leap Day – What Don’t You Have Time For?

The way I understand it Leap Day should be ours to do with anything we want with.  Leap day is the adjustment to the calendar for the 6 hours each year that we don’t have a way to assign to a day.  Every four years we put those 6 hours together and call it February 29th.  I did all my stuff within the confines of the year and I didn’t require the use of those hours to complete that stuff.  That to me means that I should be able to do anything with this day in my opinion.  I can’t understand why this day isn’t a holiday?

“Today is an ephemeral ghost…
A strange amazing day that comes only once every four years. For the rest of the time it does not “exist.”
In mundane terms, it marks a “leap” in time, when the calendar is adjusted to make up for extra seconds accumulated over the preceding three years due to the rotation of the earth. A day of temporal tune up!
But this day holds another secret—it contains one of those truly rare moments of delightful transience and light uncertainty that only exist on the razor edge of things, along a buzzing plane of quantum probability…
A day of unlocked potential.
Will you or won’t you? Should you or shouldn’t you?
Use this day to do something daring, extraordinary and unlike yourself. Take a chance and shape a different pattern in your personal cloud of probability!”
Vera Nazarian, The Perpetual Calendar of Inspiration

So as much as wishing works with wells it isn’t going to change that Wednesday is going to be another work day and if I want the day to be something more I’m going to have to attach more meaning to it.  I do appreciate the preciseness of the day.  One day that is made up of 6 hours from the previous four years.  One day that someone figured out from the stars that is part of the count of the time it takes for the earth to circle the sun.

When I was learning to be a programmer one of the tests for each language in school was to write the formula for leap day’s calculation. I always held the belief that this was more an exercise in theory to demonstrate that when taking the responsibility to write a program that would be used and trusted by another you had to take into considerations all facts.  I guess prior to computers the printers and calendar makers had that responsibility.

if year modulo 4 is 0
   then
if year modulo 100 is 0
           then
if year modulo 400 is 0
                   then
                       is_leap_year
               else
                   not_leap_year
       else is_leap_year
else not_leap_year

True to the movie that was made in 2010 named Leap Day in the British Isles a woman can propose to a man.  I read on Wikipedia that if a man declines that he may owe the woman 12 pairs of gloves as consideration.  Another item read that a man who declines owes the woman enough fabric for a dress.  I wonder if the woman must present an engagement ring to a man and if he may keep it if she calls off the wedding?

The idea is that this day is special and as rare as the Olympic games.  Bless those who choose to get married today, who have a baby today, those who are celebrating a birthday and also to those who pass away on a leap day.  This is a 1 in 1,460 day occurrence.

Cheers – Michelle

Thanks to Catherine my office manage for getting the team awesome slingshot flying frogs to mark the day!
